return to Cathy Helgeland's home page UW Colleges Department receives Annual Teaching Excellence Award, 9/14/2000 The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents recently presented the UW Colleges Department of Geography and Geology with of one of three annual Teaching Excellence Awards. UW-Manitowoc’s Catherine Helgeland, Professor of Geography and Geology and former chair of the department, accepted the award on behalf of the department. Helgeland chaired the UW Colleges Department of Geography and Geology from 1995 to 1999 and compiled the original portfolio submitted as the application for the award. Helgeland noted that the department faces challenges due to the fact that it is composed of 20 individuals spread across the 13 freshman/sophomore campuses of the UW System. In spite of those challenges, Helgeland says the department has “succeeded in creating a cohesive community of teacher-scholars whose common goal is to promote and foster excellence in teaching.” Another department member, Dr. Michael Jurmu, said of the department, “Everyone helps everyone, and the results are well prepared young adults with new knowledge to utilize in our ever-changing, globalizing world!" As criteria for the award, the department had to show that it: recognizes and fosters excellence in teaching; approaches teaching as a public, collaborative activity; has thoughtfully constructed an effective curricula; and creates a positive climate for learning. As outlined in the portfolio, the UW Colleges Department of Geography and Geology also demonstrated: UW System leadership; innovation and involvement in the UW Colleges; regional and national involvement in teaching and learning; and a plan for future initiatives. The Board of Regents instituted the awards on 1992 as a way of recognizing and rewarding the UW System’s finest teachers and departments. One department and two individuals are honored each year. This is the first time a UW Colleges department has won the award. Helgeland was a recipient of the award in 1997. |
