Professor Attends Annual
Geographer’s Meeting, Travels to Enhance Classroom Experience Catherine Helgeland, Professor of Geography and Geology at the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc, strives to improve the classroom experience for her students by continually expanding her own knowledge. This commitment to her discipline and profession is demonstrated by her recent travels and scholarly activities. Helgeland recently attended the Association of American Geographers Annual Meeting held in New Orleans, Louisiana. She attended several sessions about African geography, which is been a topic of focus in her World Regional Geography class. Also of interest to Helgeland were book displays since she is organizing groups in her Weather and Climate class to review texts. As part of the conference, Helgeland also participated in a field trip to Frauborg Tremè, a neighborhood that used to be a suburb outside the French Quarter about 200 years ago. Today, it is in the heart of New Orleans and is a traditionally poor Creole of color neighborhood. As the neighborhood is rebuilt into a more affluent one, many of the poor are being displaced. Helgeland notes, “The trip was a fascinating glimpse into a conflict between different socio-economic groups.” She also visited a tiny museum displaying various costumes representing a vast cultural diversity. Prior to her trip to the conference, Helgeland traveled to Texas to visit several art museums. Helgeland is continually trying to expand her background in art as she continues to integrate art with geography and geology in her teaching. She viewed exhibits about Modigliani and the Artists of Montparnasse in Paris around the turn of the last century, an exhibit of Akan gold from West Africa, and an exhibit of French paintings from the Pushkin Museum in Moscow – many never before seen outside of Russia. The trip also included a stop in Lafayette to observe Cajun dancing. Helgeland has been a Professor of Geography and Geology at UW-Manitowoc since 1980. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UW-Madison. In 1997 she was awarded the Regents Teaching Excellence Award. |
